THE NOTION OF AUTHENTICITY REVISITED A SEARCH FOR URBAN HERITAGE CONSERVATION APPROACH

    Get PDF
During the last five decades urban heritage conservation has evolved significantly as an urban design discipline which is nec-essary for dealing with older urban areas that were once reduced to being the locus of monuments worthy of architectural conservation. Recent international experiences highlight conflicting interests in term of intention and focus, between archaeologist, who focus on monument restoration, and urban designers, who emphasize the need of conserving the spirit of the past. Nonetheless, a new understand-ing about urban heritage was materialized from the latest urban conservation praxis involving archaeologists, urban planners, urban de-signers and architects. The new insight about urban heritage has brought new approaches to urban conservation during recent decades. The latest of these approaches aim at the creation of enjoyable urban experiences that have a historical identity, rather at the simple re-tention of authentic urban history. In fact, urban heritage conservation is not simply a matter of preserving and creating harmonious constellation between historic fabrics and new infill developments, but rather a continuing project in shaping the environment. Based on several observations, this paper discusses that historic fabrics contribute considerably in place making, in enriching the quality of a place and offer opportunities for cultural appreciation. Thus, creating a sense of place is more than to the exact restoration of urban details. It also argues the importance of the making of interesting and liveable urban quarters that guarantee social, cultural and environmental sustainability

Early Chinese Settlements Adaptive Reuse as History and Activity Node at Lasem Living Museum

    Get PDF
The concept of a living museum depicts Lasem – a multi-ethnic city known for its harmonious community – as a small city with diverse heritage nodes spreading across its plateau. However, the first settlements that became the prologue of Lasem’s history and development, are not being appreciated enough as it is now being used for swallow's nest production. Therefore, it is necessary to do a thoughtful conservation effort for the area of the early settlements, as one of the important nodes in Lasem. The reuse of heritage buildings and reactivation of the area into a place of activity that can support economic activities, social needs, and cultural sustainability for the people, will create more sustainable tourism for Lasem as an integrated living museum. Batik Tiga Negeri is Lasem’s distinctive fabric product and intangible heritage with an international reputation. The handmade creation involves endangered heritage: the elderly artists and the traditional Chinese architecture-influenced building which is used as the production house. Merging batik value into the adaptive reuse of early settlement buildings – which is also derived from traditional Chinese housing, will strengthen the most historical node while conserving important heritage elements, adding stronger bonds throughout Lasem as both a living museum and tourism destination

The Role of Community Organizations for Place Design in Bali Aga Pengotan’s Vernacular Settlements

    Get PDF
The Balinese Aga Pengotan community’s vernacular settlements were built by their ancestors to accommodate daily activities and ritual activities. The Pengotan community undergoes religious activities as part of their daily life, even placing religious ritual activities above everything. The Pengotan community has many ritual agendas and must be attended by all members of the community. The temple is prepared as a place to accommodate ritual ceremonies. A temple as a holy place is a collection of buildings connected by open spaces. The making of holy places is possible to happen because of the involvement of holy people in the ritual organization. This paper discusses the relationship between community organizations to maintain the continuity of the place as a place for ritual ceremonies. This behaviour research uses descriptive exploratory methods with the Observing Physical Trace (OPT) and Observing Environmental Behaviour (OEB) methods. The results show that the holy place was created and maintained for its sustainability by holy people in which the marriage institution was used by the ancestors as the guardian of the place sustainability. Through marriage, a ritual organization is formed to prepare, carry out, and supervise the course of the ritual. Keywords: Bali Aga, vernacular settlement, place, community organization, ritual.DOI: 10.7176/ADS/87-05Publication date: November 30th 202

The Other Sensory Approach on Exploring Urban Heritage Landscape. Case Study: Chinese Quarter of Semarang

    Get PDF
A new interpretation is needed to give meaning to conservation in the urban development framework and to support a sustainable cultural environment. Based on Québec Declaration (2008) and Burra Charter (2013), intangible dimensions became matter to give a richer and deeper meaning to the cultural heritage area. A shift has been seen in urban theories arguing for attention to the multi-sensory approach. This concept becomes matters as the raising critique towards the domination of visual perception in the built environment's design. The domination of audio-vision starting to reach out by the practitioners and scholars, unlike the other senses such as smell, tended to overlook and misconception. This paper outlines a pilot study's findings addressing holistic person-sensory experience in exploring the role of odor in shaping the cultural heritage area in Pecinan nowadays. It will discuss various scents detected, personal perception, and the link between odor and Pecinan's character. All this data was collected using a smells walk, questionnaire survey, and interview. This research aims to explore the potential interface in preservation conflict between the character of existing historic town and change as smellscape is part of the intangible element and part of triangle components of a sense of place in supporting successful urban place

    Get PDF
Nowadays, Surabaya experience Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon because of the increase of surface temperature from 1994 until 2011. The urban structure parameters have a role in decreasing the UHI phenomenon. Rajawali is a historic area where it can be sensitive to climatic condition and urban heat island. This paper aimed to analyze the correlation of urban structure parameters toward climatic variables (as an indicator affecting UHI) in the heritage area of Rajawali. This study focuses on some urban structure parameters that are Building Coverage Ratio (BCR), Floor Area Ratio (FAR), aspect ratio (H/W), Volumetric Compactness (S/V) and land cover in the site. The analysis method is a simulation from Envi-met where simulation performed is run in March 2018. In order to check how far the urban structure affects climatic variable, the urban structure parameters are compared with each variable of climatic using the statistical package, R. For correlation analysis Pierson’s r coefficient is used. The result shows that not all urban structure parameters correlate with climatic variables in the Heritage Area. The findings of this study are expected to be the basis for designing the heritage area in Rajawali so that the design can respond to the UHI phenomenon in Surabaya.     Keywords: Urban Structure Parameters, Climatic Parameters, Heritage Area, UHI (Urban Heat Island

Abstract: Streets as primary circulation channels for people in moving through and to places have provided experiences and impressions as streetscapes characters become immediate sources for people in creating general image of the city. Imageable streets have become main street and representation of identity. However, city growths had always been followed by new streets developments and activities. People’s perception about the image of a city might probably change as imageable streets were altered. Bogor was known as a colonial resort city and botanical center that had undergone a dynamic process of growth and changes driven by the power of economic forces. This paper attempts to describe the influence of urban morphological development on street imageability, by comparing resident's and visitor's perception, and examining the extent of its influence to the image of the city in relation to urban identity. Conducted survey confirms that familiarity has a major influence on imageability. Morphological analysis of Bogor's street networks development reveals that street functional arrangement policy as well as development of new arterial street had an impact to street familiarity and led to some changes in the street imageability that could affect the perception on urban identity

DEVELOPMENT OF VISUAL QUALITY EVALUATIVE ASSESSMENT METHOD IN CAMPUS LANDSCAPE

    Get PDF
The design of campus landscape is expected to reflect the institution values, provide the character and the spirit of place to campus environment. It is highly influenced by visual experience and impression of campus environment. There are two methods in landscape visual quality assessment: descriptive assessment method and evaluative assessment method. Both assessment methods cannot be done simultaneously, but as a sequence phase. Descriptive assessment method should be done first to obtain a reference for evaluative assessment method. Landscape visual quality evaluative assessment method is used to measure the level of public assessment about visual quality and visual response. Information Processing Theory is used to develop the visual quality evaluative assessment method and to obtain unified integration between descriptive assessment and evaluative assessment. The development of evaluative assessment method includes the process of comparing, averaging, or determine the ranking of each environmental hue or landscape areas in campus, based on the public or college user community preferences

Maintaining or negotiating identity: The socio-political dynamics of community mosques in Malang, East Java, Indonesia

    Get PDF
The contemporary dynamics of mosque development in Indonesia is closely related to the socio-political dynamics of various Islamic groups or organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, etc. A great number of mosques in Indonesia have been built by Muslim communities affiliated to one of these Islamic groups. In this case, mosque architecture can be considered as one means of expression of the communities’ specific identities which derived from their particular perspectives on the ideal picture of a mosque. However, there is also another case where a mosque is built by a heterogeneous Muslim community. In this context, the image of an ideal mosque becomes the object of negotiations among the diverse affiliated members. This paper discusses to what extent these socio-political dynamics affect the identity representation of community mosques in Malang, one of the regions in East Java where the dynamic interactions among various Islamic groups take place. The result shows that the attempts to represent identity in the community mosques are related to the socio-political dynamic of the Muslim communities. In the mosques of the specific groups, some architectural elements, such as the iconographic ornaments and colors, the spatial arrangement, and the specific features are maintained to represent their specific identities. However, in the mosques of the heterogeneous Muslim communities, these elements are negotiated and challenged by the community members. These negotiations could result, whether in the mutual understanding and tolerance, or in the space claim attempts by the dominant group through the domination of the activity systems, the role restrictions, and the physical control over the mosque
